SpectroTest Tubes and Bars

SpectroTest is a mobile metal analyzer. The probe which executes the spark for the analysis, is connected to the electronics through a flexible optical fiber with a length of 8 meters. In this configuration, it is possible to move the probe (and so the spark positioning) to the product, instead of the other way around. Because it is a mobile instrument for use in the production area, it is designed to work in a relatively hostile environment. Therefore, it is the perfect instrument for online spectral analysis.


An important step in the process of total quality control and demands of Tracking & Tracing is a 100% control of all individual products. The SpectroTest-based automated system for online analysis of tubes and bars makes it possible to obtain real time analysis data from these products to meet these objectives. The system can be operated in a completely automated mode, including preparation of the tubes and bars and cleaning of the electrodes. All of the analysis data can be communicated to a higher level business information system, although in most cases a go/nogo is sufficient.
Good preparation with no possibility of contamination is an important condition for a good analysis. In most cases a standard grinding tool can be used. The highly abrasive grinding material is non-contaminating and especially selected to obtain results regarding the material characteristics of the products (ferrous and nonferrous).
Optionally, a pre-grinding tool can be mounted to boost production. In the position before sparking position, the pre-grinder prepares the tube at the same time that the probe is analyzing in the main position.
The system can communicate at two levels: Level 1 is at the I/0-level of the production control PLC, to enable a problem-free and safe working environment. At this level the SpectroTest is controlled by the system PLC. Level 2 is for interfacing with the customer data processing system (analysis data, logistics, tracking & tracing, etc.).
Remote control
The complete system can be remote controlled from e.g., the control room. This enables the operator to stay in the control room. It is not necessary to enter the sometimes hostile production environment. Only calibration should be carried out directly at the unit, using the operating panel and the manual control of the SpectroTest.

The unit consists of the following components:
  • Probe for the Spectro-analysis
  • Product preparation (one or two grinding tools)

  • Calibration position

  • Dry and oil-free pressurized air (at least 5 bar)
